Silicon Valley is betting that this dystopian sci fi idea will be real.
Fortnite is attempting to be more than a videogame. This is the latest example of Fortnite bringing experiences to its gameplay. It hosted performances by Marshmello, Travis Scott, and three movies by Christopher Nolan last year.
The metaverse was initially conceived as the setting for dystopian science fiction novels in which virtual universes offer an escape from crumbling societies, but the tech industry has painted a brighter image of the concept in recent months. The idea is to create a space similar to the internet, but one that users (via digital avatars) can wander around in of and interact with one another in real-time.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney was adamant about presenting Fortnite as a metaverse and an "social experience" when he took the stand in the high-profile lawsuit filed by his company against Apple earlier this year regarding the commissions the iPhone maker extracts from app developers. Sweeney's argument was meant to support Epic's claim that Fortnite is more than just a game. It also challenged Apple's claim that Fortnite is not a monopoly because Fortnite users can play it on other devices, not just iPhones or iPads.

Fortnite isn't the only well-known game that heavily rely on the concept of metaverse.
Roblox is among the most well-known examples. It features games-within a-games that are created by users. In recent months, Roblox has expanded into concerts and TV shows. Minecraft is owned by Microsoft (MSFT), has also worked on expanding its own metaverse, with the group Reporters Without Borders recently creating a virtual library within the game , which includes articles that have been banned all over the world.

Big Tech is also more open to the metaverse. The word was mentioned nearly two dozen times during the company's recent earnings call. The social media company has been testing for years virtual reality features and services for work environments, too and in the workplace - and is looking to expand beyond the realm of video calls that are two-dimensional.
A full-fledged metaverse is still likely to be a few years away due to a variety of reasons however, the gaming industry is the leading force in the field.
